If there is any way that a team could respectfully decline a #1 ranking in men's college basketball, I think they need to start.
Being ranked #1 in men's college basketball right now is about as dangerous as handling an atomic bomb. Okay, maybe it's not that dangerous, but you get my point. Three #1's have lost while holding the #1 ranking this season: Kansas, Texas, and Kentucky. Kansas is ranked #1 for the second time this season and they had a dangerously close call on the road at Colorado last night.
I have been involved in college athletics for four years now and I understand how much pressure there is when you have a target on your back. There is so much parody in college basketball these days that it's extra dangerous to have that target on your back.
We will find out a lot about Kansas and any other teams that might hold the #1 ranking this season. If you want to win a national championship, you need to embrace playing with a target on your back.
