Back when I had a lot more time, before college and before high school, I watched every sport I could find on the television. And back then, NHL hockey was actually one of them. ESPN carried the sport. There was much more than a weekly Sunday game on NBC. Then the lockout happened. The NHL lost an entire season and even more money. The ESPN contract was gone. But is the NHL making its comeback?
How many of you followed the Olympic hockey tournament? Did you at least watch the gold medal game? The final was impressive; the type of game you'd find scripted in an inspirational sports film. Canada pulled off the win but I can't be too upset with the US clubs silver medal performance. The squad made a lot more noise than anyone expected. Plus, they'll be good for a long time since they bosted the youngest squad at the games.
The question all over the sports stations now is, are people going back to the NHL? The thrilling Olympic tournament featured mostly NHL players. The gold medal game was the most watched television program ever in Canada. Now that we've been exposed to the drama and seen how exciting the game can be, will Americans show an interest? If we do, there's a chance ESPN sees dollar signs and signs up to put games back on during the week.
So, did you watch any of the Olympic hockey tournament? If so, how has it affected your interested in the NHL?
