I am not a Kansas hater, but when I'm long gone, probably heading east on 35, cruising down a road paved with my starving artist breadcrumbs, I will look upon KU and KSU, and pretty much everything else beginning with the letter smushed between J and L, and go "eh." While I will always hope for the best for WSU teams, Jayhawks and Wildcats won't factor into my box score perusings. Or my love letters. Or my hate mail. I simply won't care either way. Then again, when Bob Lutz's name appears in a column featuring either of the two universities, I'll take a gander. The man simply made me want to hear his opinion.
Lutz came off as honest and informed, an anti-BSer who probably could have written in the major metros if he so desired. I was surprised, however, that Lutz has no qualms about the dearth of a professional team in Wichita. Perhaps it's because I was raised on nothing but the pros, but I would think that not having the Chiefs or Royals playing in his backyard would be something Lutz would lament. But his love for this city was palpable and, as an outsider, I just have to take him for his word that Wichita has everything he needs when it comes to the athletic scene. Besides, when is the last time the Chiefs or Royals were considered a pro team anyway? Yes, that just came from a Cubs/Bears/Bulls fan.
So, while the trip to the Eagle was quality, and while Joe from Vype was informational about the business side of the industry, Lutz came off as the newspaper biz's biggest cheerleader, though he thankfully did no rah-rahing or pom-pom-back flip-double kick-scissor splits comboing. It's just too bad his favorite athlete is a Cardinal.
