As far as Catch It Kansas goes, it was interesting to see the perspective of how they do what they do. I actually used to work with some of the people that put together the web site and it's been interesting to see how they have developed that niche. It seems like by combining stories along with video from KWCH, they have piqued a lot of people's interest.
Now to say the largest newspaper in the state of Kansas is not "competition" is stretching it, a bit, I would say. Joanna Chadwick has done a nice job establishing the Eagle's high school sports blog, Varsity Kansas, as a state-wide presence. As where I feel like the Eagle's overall writing is stronger, there is no denying that CIK has found itself with tons of pictures and videos.
Being a Wichita Eagle guy, it was interesting to see how they work. Nothing really surprised me, it's essentially the same as what the Eagle does. But it's always interesting to see things from a different perspective. The Eagle is a little behind the times in terms of new media. It's not to say they haven't tried, but I just think in the wrong places. They have created twitter accounts for their high school beat writers, but really, how many high school students have a twitter? Answer: Almost none. Facebook is the way to go, but they have yet to tap into that resource.
Oh well, maybe they will figure it out one day. But until then, Wichita can enjoy several qualities media outlets that cover high school sports in Varsity Kansas, Catch It Kansas & VYPE.
