I would call this past Thursday's class both the most informative and entertaining presentation we've had this semester. Chris Frye, Bruce Haertl and Jim Kobbe represent both sides of the coin in the business.
Haertl and Kobbe have been in the game forever and are set in their ways. I think that's why they tended to come across cynical at times. I've had the chance to see Kobbe speak before so I knew what I was in for. He delivered exactly what I expected and that was great. I was excited to hear from Bruce Haertl. I think it's because he's the sports guy for the number one station in Wichita so it felt like getting to hear from a superstar. But that's just my small town background. These two guys, to me, represent what brought television news to a high level. They got into the business before the Internet and the 24 hour news cycle came in to play. After going through that and now sitting through the rough times the television industry is in today, they've seen it all and have the knowledge to impart to students like us what the business is really like.
Chris Frye was fun to listen to. Being the young guy, I found him easy to listen to, he came across well as a peer and related well to the younger students. He represents the new way of doing things. He really got across the point of having to work hard to get what you want, especially with the way the stations run now. You have to be able to do it all and Frye knows that well, even better than Haertl and Kobbe because he doesn't have the level of comfort and establishment as the other two who have been around longer.
These guys were great and I'd jump at the chance to hear them speak again. Maybe it's just me, but I'd like to see the three of them with their own Wichita version of Pardon the Interruption or Around the Horn. Now that would be entertainment.
