I have first-hand experience with what Sports Information Directors do and how hard they work, we have one of the best in the nation over at baseball in Tami Cutler. So, Larry Rankin did not tell me anything I did not already know, I watch Tami work on a daily basis. SID's are who make game day operations go smoothly for the media. Plus they deal with plenty more personnel than just media (players and coaches).
I watch Tami do everything that has to do with baseball on Goshockers.com, Facebook, Twitter, media guides, etc., the list goes on. All SID's at Wichita State do the same thing, and most others at other universities too. Sports information is on the same trend as journalism, everyone is being forced to become a jack of many traits. Not only do you have to write, but you must be tech- and Internet-savvy. This is just another example of modern-day consolidation.
As we all saw, Wichita State has first-class athletic facilities, not just for the athletes but for support staff too. The Koch Arena media room is state-of-the-art and takes a back seat to no one. I know that the press box at Eck Stadium is big league quality and makes life a little easier for SID's. I enjoyed hearing Larry's perspective and it gives me another point of view about how valuable SID's are.
